MEDIA RELEASE

AIJAC National Chairman Mark Leibler AC met with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last week in a meeting in which Netanyahu expressed his delight that he will soon be visiting Australia as a guest of the Australian government, the first visit to Australia by a sitting Israeli Prime Minister.

Mr. Netanyahu, who has twice met Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull, stressed the very close, warm ties between Australia and Israel and conveyed how much he had enjoyed his productive meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on her recent official visit to Israel.

Mr. Leibler said, “I am very excited about Mr. Netanyahu’s historic forthcoming visit, and I know the Australian Jewish community shares my enthusiasm. Australia and Israel are important friends and allies, with shared values of democracy, rule of law and egalitarianism, and ever increasing trade and security ties.

“It’s not easy for an Israeli Prime Minister to travel to Australia, as seen by the fact it hasn’t happened before, so this coming visit demonstrates the strength of the relationship between our two countries, and the importance Mr. Netanyahu attributes to it,” Mr. Leibler concluded.
